A Shared Dream: Michael’s 1969 Camaro

The Start of a Dream
As a lifelong Camaro fan, Michael Chastain knew what he was looking for when he was in the market for a classic car. Sleek, fast, and the key ability to modify the car of his dreams. The Gainesville, GA family searched far and wide, until the dream was found. A n orange 1969 Chevrolet Camaro was discovered in 2022, owned by Detroit Speed friend SW. To put it in his words, “I have been a 1969 Camaro enthusiast since I was a kid.” Michael knew what he was after, and he found it.
As a former Detroit Speed build, Michael knew just the caliber of car he was getting. This was no cruiser – it was a bruiser. With the entire catalog of Detroit Speed suspension components already bolted on, Michael was ready for the road and the track immediately. As ready as his new Camaro was, Michael was inspired by more, and that’s where the story takes a turn.
Turmoil to Triumph
Michael’s daughter tragically passed away at just 13 years old. The car that Michael bought was seen as their car together, and the plans they had were incredible. Many of their conversations were centered around their car, and the endless possibilities in front of them. To Michael, his loss fueled him to make his dream a reality, in memory of the one who shared the dream with him.
Michael knew that restoring his Camaro from the ground up himself would take time, so he sought out builders across the country. “Tasteful and unique was the goal”, Michael recalls, “I saw Mark Stielow's Apex Camaro and had my inspiration”. With inspiration in hand, Michael turned to Dutchboys Hotrods, a father-and-son restoration team, to continue his ambition. Dutchboys became the best team to preserve the story behind the car, while also giving it what brought the car its namesake: Vengeance.
Vengeance 101
Under the hood of Vengeance sits a modified Chevrolet LT5 engine, cranking more than 900 horsepower to the wheels on an E85 tune. Speaking of wheels, Vengeance sits on a set of beautiful Forgeline CF201 Carbon Fiber wheels, and the Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires that wrap them give this Camaro the grip it needs for any corner. Michael wanted the same geometry that came when the car was purchased, and the previously installed Detroit Speed suspension components were the key. With the Quadralink and DSE’s Hydroformed Subframe, Vengeance kept the stance and control that Michael was after and gave him the rigidity to take his car anywhere he pleases. Michael rides in style with a fully custom Avant Garde interior, exceeding his goals of comfort and functionality. The exterior stands out just as much as the interior, thanks to a custom Ferrari Red mix from Dutchboys. Several tasteful body modifications came from the team as well, including a diffuser and several other ground effects. When speaking on the exterior, Michael knows where credit is due; “The guys at Dutchboys get 100% of the credit for this.”
Proven Winner
This car is a head-turner, and we’re not the only ones to believe that. After placing in the top 10 of Goodguys Columbus Builder Choice and being a finalist for Muscle Machine of the Year at Goodguys Texas, Michael has his vision right at home. “The vehicle is what I have always envisioned as the perfect blend of styling and performance for a 1969 Camaro. As mentioned earlier, the car is dedicated to the memory of my daughter. While she never got the opportunity to see it completed, we spent a lot of time talking about it and I know she would have loved it.”
Sharing the Stories, Corner by Corner
Michael takes his pride and joy across the country today, sharing his love for the 1969 Camaro, the story behind his car, and the memory of his late daughter. While paint may peel and fade with time, the memories are what stay and drive Michael every day.
