Ken Block's 1977 F100 Gymkhana "Hoonitruck"

One of Detroit Speed's most extensive and proud projects, the build team brought to life Ken Block’s 1977 Ford F100 “Hoonitruck. This project was inspired by Block’s childhood memories of his father’s truck, and started as a 1977 F100 cab, and the rest became a high-tech symphony of , precision, and innovation.
The heart of the Hoonitruck is a 3.5L Ford EcoBoost V6, a twin-turbocharged engine derived from the Le Mans-winning Ford GT development program. Block worked with Ford Performance and asked for their suggestions when it came to powering the rowdy restomod. Given that one of Block’s favorite daily drivers is a twin turbocharged, V6-powered Ford Raptor, it made sense to continue that trend and place the twin turbo V6 in the Hoonitruck, as well.

Outfitted with Garrett GTX3071R Gen II turbochargers, the engine makes an astounding 917 horsepower and 702 lb-ft of torque. The intake manifold, 3D-printed by Ford Performance, is as much a piece of art as it is functional. To channel the power and torque, a Sadev SC-90 six-speed sequential gearbox is paired with a robust all-wheel-drive system. This drivetrain, complete with Sadev differentials, prop shafts, and driveshafts, gives the Hoonitruck precise power delivery, whether launching from a standstill or shredding all four tires around corners in Block’s famed Ghymkana courses.
Detroit Speed’s modular chassis design anchors the Hoonitruck’s versatility. Fabricated at our Mooresville, North Carolina facility, the chassis integrates aluminum and steel, with a modular, three-piece chassis composed of front, center, and rear sections that bolt together using a clevis system. Detroit Speed designed each section to be easily replaceable if damage was sustained. Many off-the-shelf Detroit Speed components were used, including Forged Aluminum Uprights front and rear.

Suspension was no less critical in this build. Detroit Speed engineered custom components, including their forged aluminum uprights, to deliver true racecar-like handling. The truck employs KW/ST coilovers, a Woodward race steering rack, and custom independent rear suspension by Chuck G Fab for precise control and response. Wilwood race brakes with six-piston calipers and massive 14-inch rotors provide the stopping power needed to tame the impressive machine.

Many other parts on the project, too, were designed to be quickly replaced, including the hand-formed and military-grade aluminum body panels. The front and rear bumpers, as well as the front splitter and a few other pieces, were formed from carbon fiber, while the factory grill, headlights, taillights, and emblems were all Cerakoted to protect them from road debris and carnage. Detroit Speed retained original F100 design cues, such as the blacked-out factory grille, while incorporating modern aerodynamics. Even the stock doors were lightened in the pursuit of performance.
Inside, the cab’s vintage steel shell features cutting-edge technology. A carbon fiber dashboard houses a Bosch Motorsports display, Autometer gauges, and Motec M142 engine management. Recaro Profi SPA seats, a Momo Hoonigan steering wheel, and a hydraulic handbrake emphasize Block’s focus on driver engagement. Practical features like a backup camera and functional trailer hitch add a hint of functionality.

The Hoonitruck was featured in Gymkhana Ten and Climbkhana Two videos, and showcased its prowess on iconic routes, including China’s Tianmen Mountain. Detroit Speed’s craftsmanship transformed Block’s vision into a reality, blending engineering excellence with Block’s signature flair for the wild and outlandish.
