Mike & Janie's Immaculate 1941 Willys

Mike and Janie Braswell’s 1941 Willys is the definition of a reborn legend. What started as an old drag car—stripped down to little more than a steel body shell—has been transformed into a show-quality street machine, with vintage aesthetics blended with modern performance. The Braswells wanted an all-steel Willys with an original look, which was a challenge that required sourcing custom-fabricated steel body panels from the only shop with the capability to produce them. Beneath that steel skin, Detroit Speed delivered a foundation worthy of the car’s heritage and performance goals.

The build features a one-off chassis engineered by Detroit Speed, using the X-Gen 535 as its backbone. This chassis was designed specifically for the Willys, incorporating modern geometry for stability, handling, and durability that far surpasses anything the car originally came equipped with in the pre-WWII times. The DSE-built 9-inch rearend houses a 3.70 gear ratio and Moser 31-spline axle shafts, ensuring the car hooks up with confidence whether cruising or showing off its power. A Dynotech driveshaft connects to a Legend 5-speed manual transmission, giving the driver full control of the LS7 under the hood.

To complement the X-Gen chassis, the 1941 Willys benefits from DSE headers, engineered for maximum flow and optimal fitment within the frame. Every aspect of this build was executed with precision, from the custom bodywork to the carefully curated drivetrain components. The result is a flawless fusion of that timeless, old-school Willys style with modern Detroit Speed engineering, making this car a fully capable, high-performance cruiser built to drive.
