Mitch and Karen’s 1969 Camaro

Mitch doesn’t think twice when he climbs into his 1969 Chevy Camaro. It’s not some fragile collector piece that only sees the light of day on perfect-weather Sundays—it’s built to be driven, and driven hard. With a full lineup of Detroit Speed suspension underneath, the car delivers what every muscle car owner really wants: confidence, control, and a whole lot of fun every time you turn the key.
The Beginning: A Barn Find With Potential
More than a decade ago, Mitch and his wife Karen came across the Camaro tucked away in a barn not far from home. It wasn’t pretty—plenty of rust, old paint, and worn-out parts—but Mitch saw what it could become. A lifelong car enthusiast, he’d always wanted to build a first-gen Camaro. With some encouragement from Karen, they decided to take on the project together. “It wasn’t perfect, but we knew it had potential,” Mitch recalls.
They brought it home and got to work in their garage, taking it apart piece by piece. As with most projects, the original plan was simple: clean it up, fix the rust, get it back on the road. But once they started, the vision grew. As Mitch test drove the car in its early stages—with its tired suspension, vague steering, and plenty of body roll—it became clear this build wasn’t going to stop at stock.

Enter Detroit Speed: The Real Transformation
Mitch knew that to truly enjoy the car, especially on winding backroads and longer road trips, he needed a suspension system that could handle modern driving. That’s where Detroit Speed came in.
Up front, Mitch installed Detroit Speed’s hydroformed front subframe, paired with their tubular control arms, adjustable coilovers, and sway bar system. This package completely changed how the Camaro handled. The old factory geometry—built more for boulevard cruising than corner carving—was replaced with modern alignment, better camber gain, and a much more planted feel. Mitch immediately noticed the sharper steering response and how composed the car felt even over rough pavement. “It tracks straight and feels solid,” he says. “No more fighting the wheel.”
In the rear, Detroit Speed’s Quadra-Link suspension replaced the old leaf springs with a four-link coilover setup. The new design keeps the rear tires planted under acceleration and provides far better ride quality without compromising handling. Combined with Detroit Speed’s mini-tub kit, Mitch was able to fit wide 10-inch rear wheels with plenty of grip—a major improvement over the narrow factory setup.

Power to Match
Under the hood, the Camaro runs a 6.0L LS-based V8, paired with a Tremec T56 six-speed manual. The fuel-injected LS delivers plenty of power with smooth, reliable operation, while the modern transmission allows for both aggressive driving and relaxed highway cruising. With a balanced chassis underneath him, Mitch can actually use all that power with confidence.
To ensure the car stops as well as it goes, Mitch upgraded to four-wheel disc brakes with large vented rotors and multi-piston calipers. Now, when it’s time to scrub off speed before a tight corner, the brakes feel firm and predictable.
Not Just a Weekend Toy
What makes Mitch’s Camaro even more rewarding is that it’s not just a show car or occasional cruiser. It’s fully streetable, reliable, and comfortable. Detroit Speed’s coilovers allow him to fine-tune the ride for both daily driving and spirited weekend runs. The Vintage Air system keeps the cabin cool, and updated gauges give the interior a clean, modern touch while still respecting its original style.
Mitch and Karen often take the Camaro on longer drives, enjoying the fact that it feels stable and relaxed even at highway speeds. “It’s easy to drive. You don’t get tired after an hour behind the wheel,” he says.
A Build That Delivers What Matters
For Mitch, this build was never about chasing trophies or creating a museum piece. It was about building a car he could truly enjoy behind the wheel. The Detroit Speed suspension transformed an aging muscle car into something that feels modern without losing its classic character.
“I trust it now. That’s what makes the biggest difference,” Mitch says. “It’s fun, it’s fast, and I can actually go out and enjoy it.”
In the end, that’s what Detroit Speed helps deliver: the ability to build a car that looks the part but drives like something far newer, giving drivers like Mitch more confidence, more comfort, and most importantly—more fun.
