Mo's Custom Detroit Speed-Built 1969 Dodge Charger "MAY/HEM"

3 minute read

Mo’s 1969 Dodge Charger "MAY/HEM" is a full-blown statement of muscle car dominance, a high-horsepower street machine. Built with the precision and innovation that defines Detroit Speed's custom car builds, this Charger was engineered to deliver performance without sacrificing its road manners. With its big power, custom craftsmanship, and top-tier components, the car was designed to be as competitive in elite builder showcases as it is on the street.

Powering this beast is a 426 cubic-inch Gen 3 Hemi from Arrington Performance, force-fed by a large 4.0L Whipple supercharger. The result? A dyno-proven 850 horsepower at the rear wheels. That level of power demands a driveline that can take abuse, which is why the Charger features a Bowler Performance-built 4L80E transmission, sending power through a Performance Driveline Engineering driveshaft to a Detroit Speed-built Ford 9-inch rearend. With C6 full floater ends and a 3.89 gear ratio, the setup offers durability and optimal power transfer.

Detroit Speed played a key role in transforming the Charger’s chassis into a modern performance platform. Up front, the car utilizes DSE’s front subframe assembly, which delivers precise geometry, improved weight distribution, and exceptional rigidity—all important in making this Charger drive like a modern supercar. Out back, DSE’s QuadraLink rear suspension system replaces the factory leaf springs with a fully adjustable four-link setup, allowing for superior handling, improved ride quality, and maximum traction under acceleration. With DSE’s suspension components, this Charger is a refined, high-performance weapon.

The build is packed with high-end components to match its cutting-edge suspension. A Bosch ABS system provides precise braking control, while a C&R radiator and charge cooler keep the boosted Hemi running at peak efficiency. Holley’s Dominator ECU manages the engine. The car rolls on Forgeline wheels wrapped in Michelin tires, providing the perfect balance of grip and aggressive aesthetics.

Inside, the Charger blends modern comfort with race-inspired functionality. You'll find Recaro seats keep the driver planted, while a full Alpine audio system and Vintage Air A/C deliver a premium, modern-day driving experience. The custom interior, stitched together by M&M Hot Rod Interiors, is as refined as the rest of the build. A Classic Instruments gauge cluster provides critical engine data, and an Ididit steering column ensures precise input from the driver.

Finished in show-quality PPG paint, every inch of the bodywork has been massaged to perfection by the team at Detroit Speed. Custom-machined parts are integrated throughout the interior, exterior, and engine bay, reinforcing the car’s one-off status. Mo wanted a 1969 Dodge Charger that not only turned heads but also dominated on the street and in competition. With Detroit Speed’s custom car building engineering at its core, this 1969 Charger is an uncompromising blend of American muscle, modern performance, and show-stopping craftsmanship.
