The DSE Z: Detroit Speed's Racey 1987 Camaro Z28

3 minute read

Detroit Speed’s 1987 Camaro Z28, known as the “DSE Z,” highlights the company’s engineering approach: blending race-ready performance with streetable practicality. The build transforms the popular third-gen Camaro into a modern-day track weapon with an unmistakable presence.

With flared fenders that push the boundaries one inch wider at all corners, a custom front splitter, a reimagined rear spoiler for added downforce, and Trackspec hood vents to channel engine heat, the DSE Z delivers both functionality and attitude. Beneath its aggressive exterior is a collection of Detroit Speed parts, ensuring it’s not just all show—it’s also all go.

This build features several key DSE components. The 12.7:1 Power Steering Box (090215DS) and DSE Steering Shaft Kit pair to offer precise steering input and direct feedback, critical for both high-speed cornering and maneuverability on the street. To tie the car together structurally, DSE’s Subframe Connectors (010110DS) eliminate chassis flex and improve rigidity, ensuring the Camaro remains planted under extreme loads. Up front, a Speed Kit 3 (031342-DDS) provides double-adjustable struts for fine-tuning the suspension, delivering maximum grip and control. Out back, the Quadralink Rear Suspension (041724-RDS) with remote-reservoir double-adjustable shocks enables unmatched adjustability for cornering prowess and ride quality. The Ford 9-inch Full Floater Housing (073504DS) and C6/C7 Full Floater Axle Shafts (070560DS) reinforce the rearend, built to withstand aggressive launches and high-horsepower abuse.

Powering this street-legal race car is a Mast Motorsports de-stroked LS7, displacing 388 cubic inches and capable of screaming to 8,500 rpm. A Bowler-built T-56 transmits the power, while Baer Extreme+ six-piston brakes provide stopping power worthy of a supercar. Rolling on Forgeline wheels wrapped in 295/35R18 tires up front and 315/30R18s in the rear, the Camaro grips the pavement like a vise. A Tilton pedal box, C&R radiator with SPAL fans, and other carefully chosen components ensure every element is ready for track days and backroad blasts.

Rather than a typical Camaro with bolt-on's, the DSE Z is a complete reengineering and modernization of the third gen F-body platform. With a focus on balance, handling, and outright performance, this build showcases Detroit Speed’s commitment to innovation and modern vehicle transformations. Whether it's carving corners or cruising the street, the DSE Z is the ultimate expression of third-gen Camaro potential.
