Kevin Hart’s ’69 Pontiac GTO: Detroit Speed Inside Look

4 minute read

Actor and comedian Kevin Hart’s tabbed Detroit Speed to craft this meticulously reimagined 1969 Pontiac GTO nicknamed “Dropa.” The car is a masterclass in blending classic muscle car heritage with modern engineering and craftsmanship. This GTO reflects Hart’s passion for performance and style while showcasing the shop’s expertise in creating pro-touring icons. The result is a car that balances raw power, refined aesthetics, and cutting-edge technology, making it as capable on the street as it is breathtaking to admire.

At the core of the build is a supercharged GM Performance LT5 crate engine that required only subtle upgrades to reach its peak of 755 horsepower. Custom headers and a 3-inch stainless-steel exhaust system ensure the LT5 breathes freely, while Detroit Speed’s approach to the engine bay design is a study in restraint and detail. Custom closeout panels, a cold-air intake routed through the front fender, and a hand-fabricated shroud over the supercharger streamline the space while concealing critical wiring and sensors. To accommodate the LT5’s dry sump lubrication system, the team repurposed the wiper cowl, creating concealed compartments for the oil and coolant tanks. Electronics and modules were also hidden beneath custom covers, ensuring the engine bay remains functional and also visually pristine. The LT5 powerplant is paired with a Bowler Performance T-56 Magnum six-speed transmission and a Detroit Speed-modified Ford 9-inch rear end with a 3.82 gear ratio, delivering a balanced mix of street-friendly drivability and thrilling performance.

The exterior of the GTO seamlessly fuses factory styling and modern refinement. Detroit Speed replaced the problematic Endura front bumper with a steel Lemans bumper, retrofitting it with GTO flip-up headlight components and Holley RetroBright LED lighting. The hood-mounted tachometer, a hallmark of the original GTO, has been transformed into a functional boost gauge for the LT5. Subtle modifications to the hood scoops provide clearance for the supercharger, while retaining the factory aesthetic. Custom 3D-printed bezels on the turn signals, adorned with a heart logo as a nod to Kevin Hart, are just one of the many personalized touches throughout the car. The Mystic Brown paint highlights the car’s muscular body lines, complemented by gold HRE wheels—20x12 inches in the rear and 20x10 inches in the front—wrapped in Michelin performance tires. Every detail, from the blacked-out trim to the recessed door locks and reshaped rear spoiler, enhances the car’s modern yet timeless appeal.

Avant Garde, in collaboration with designer Tavis Highlander, transformed the cabin with cream leather and suede upholstery paired with custom Classic Instruments gauges, which feature gold accents and subtle heartbeat motifs as a tribute to Hart’s Heartbeat Productions. The Hurst shifter with a Bowler Performance knob, an Ididit steering column with a Sparc Industries wheel, and a Vintage Air system seamlessly integrate modern functionality with classic style. Magnetic door panel inserts allow for customizable logos, offering an extra layer of personalization.

True to Detroit Speed’s ethos, the GTO’s suspension and chassis were designed for serious performance. The factory frame was upgraded with Detroit Speed’s 595 front suspension module, including tubular control arms and single-adjustable coilover shocks. In the rear, a modified Quadralink system ensures precise handling and a composed ride. Baer XTR brakes with 15-inch rotors and a Detroit Speed brake booster deliver the stopping power needed to match the LT5’s ferocious output.
